At the beginning of every academic year, the Government of Puri appoints a few individuals to identify children who are school drop-outs and get them back to school, creating awareness on education to parents and children alike.
Tanku Behra and Sankar Behra, two brothers, were brought back to school in a similar manner. They were found doing menial jobs before they were brought to Primary School, Bhudan Nagar. They are aged 11 and 13, respectively but since they didn’t know even the basics of reading & writing, teachers enrolled them in Standard I. Gradually, the duo caught up with studies and are now in Standard III. Tanku Behra is a victim of polio by birth, yet manages on his own without any help.
They lost their father a few years ago. Their mother, Domini Behra, takes care of her four sons including Tanku and Sankar. Domini used to beg near public places and traffic signals to meet daily needs. Now after few years, she sells fish for a living. Sankar says, "Our elder brother works in a factory and comes home late. We don't see him too often since he leaves for work before we wake up."
Their teacher, Prabhamani says, "Tanku and Sankar have improved a lot in all aspects. Their health condition is much better now and so is their cleanliness. The Akshaya Patra Foundation provides nutritious food and they look forward to it every day. It has motivated them to come to school."
